INTERVIEW

How did you begin exploring your ideas for your Momiji dolls? I started sketching loads of different styles and characters.

What’s your usual way of working; do you sketch first or immediately create digital files? I always start on paper. It’s easier to explore ideas and be more creative. When you are working with a digital its easy to jump ahead and start changing colours or get stuck on some small detail rather than focusing on the concept.

What was your favourite part of the design process? The first stage when you get a really good idea down on paper.

Tell us about your workspace. Do you design in a specific place or do you find it easy to work anywhere? Just give me a good computer with a Wacom tablet and a cup of coffee and I'm happy.

Tell us about a typical work day. I work as a web designer in a large communications agency. Most of the day I am dong mock ups in Photoshops or talking to developers and project managers.

What would you say are the most important characteristics for anyone wanting to work in design? You need to be humble enough to take criticism and confident enough to stand up for your ideas.

In the movie of your life which song would be the title track on the soundtrack? Bright Eyes - First day of my life. My all-time favourite!

In the kitchen, what’s your speciality dish? Chicken curry at the moment.

If you could live in any other city in the world where would you choose and why? Cape Town, I studied there for three years. It has a fantastic art culture and a lot of interesting people.

Friday nights or Sunday mornings? Friday nights! You have the whole weekend ahead of you.

Who are your design heroes? Saul Bass- for creating such an iconic style and Swedish illustrator Ingela Arrhenius, for doing what I wish I was doing.

What are your favourite magazines? Computer arts, .Net  and national geographic.
Thanks, Linnea!
