FINDING YOUR VOICE

FINDING YOUR VOICE

When we created our Little Warriors collection we wanted to include a Momiji that was a reminder to use your voice. We created Courageous You with her megaphone to be a symbol of finding the courage to speak out about things you're passionate about and in support of people who need encouragement.

She could be a the perfect gift for someone who needs to know that you're there for them, cheering them on as they speak their truth.

These are some examples of women who have spoken about using their voice and making themselves heard in a world where it's not always easy to do so.

“Even to me the issue of "stay small, sweet, quiet, and modest" sounds like an outdated problem, but the truth is that women still run into those demands whenever we find and use our voices.”

- Brené Brown, Daring Greatly

“I raise up my voice—not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard. … We cannot all succeed when half of us are held back.”

- Malala Yousafzai, activist for female education

"Words have power. TV has power. My pen has power."

- Shonda Rhimes, producer & screenwriter

"A very big part of stand-up comedy is that the audience need to believe that the comic is in control and is happy being there. It's very exposing and it forced me to stop hiding and say 'I'm disabled, I'm wobbly and I'm OK with that – I'm just going to connect with you as a person'.

- Francesca Martinez, comedian

"Speaking in public as a Black girl is already daunting enough, just coming onstage with my dark skin and my hair and my race — that in itself is inviting a type of people that have not often been welcomed or celebrated in the public sphere. Beyond that, as someone with a speech impediment, that impostor syndrome has always been exacerbated because there's the concern, Is the content of what I'm saying good enough? And then the additional fear, Is the way I'm saying it good enough?"

- Amanda Gorman, poet

“Sometimes you feel it’s braver to say something outrageous, and it’s not always. Sometimes it’s braver to say the vulnerable thing.”

- Phoebe Waller-Bridge, writer

When growing up I always heard: no regrets! Have fun? no regrets. Travel? No regrets. School? No regrets. No matter what was going on it was ALWAYS no regrets! Do it all and to the best of your ability!!!

My Grandmother who passed away in 2017 at the age of 98 taught be about dignity. She said if you have been wronged the way you handle it with words can decide on the outcome of how you are perceived when you are tested with wrong doings. She said pick your battles but pick wisely and than whatever you decide stand your ground. She lived her life with dignity and grace and taught me so much in life and about life. She is my Women Hero and no one will ever replace her.

My Great Grandmother Minnie, she told me to remember it’s always the darkest before the dawn. When I have my very low days and depression creeps in, I just remember her words and tell myself it’s just the dark and the dawn is on it’s way to push through. I miss her every day, but will always cherish her words of wisdom.

My mother is my ultimate wonder woman. She had a successful career in the defense industry (during the late 60’s into the 90’s) even though she only had a grade 6 level education and was a female minority (immigrant to boot!) in a male dominated industry & raised 2 kids with all the love she never received from her abused childhood in China. She only retired because she had to have a head surgery to remove a benign tumor on her auditory nerve. After surgery she had permanent hearing loss on one side and significant balance issues which she has overcome in her retirement.

WOW! could I pack any MORE info into this comment? She is my ultimate warrior princess/queen!

This isn’t a speech, but I’ve always loved this. As someone who struggles with anxiety, this quote from After Earth has always stuck out to me. It has taught me you can have a problem or troubling circumstance, but not become overwhelmed by it by letting your anxiety take over. :)

“Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is the product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Now do not misunderstand me, danger is very real, but fear is a choice.”

Thanks!

I didn’t get it at the time, but my mom always told me not to worry about what others think. It took many years, but I finally understand and live my life free of that burden. Thank you Mom! 🥰

I’ve been particularly inspired by the speeches and works of Michelle Obama. I just love to listen to her speak because she’s so intelligent and yet down to earth. Really inspiring.

There are several quotes that I look back upon when I doubt myself- below are my favorites

“The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. To be your own person is a hard business. If you try it, you’ll be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. Nut no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself” – Anthony Gordon

“When another person makes you suffer – It is because they suffer deeply within themselves. And their suffering is spilling over. They do no need punishment; they need help. That is the message they are sending” -Thich Nhat Hanh
